It’s time to ensure county-wide representation

Things I’ve heard going door to door include:
“Don’t forget about Earlham!”
“Are you going to remember Truro if you get elected?”

A lot of people in the corners of the county are concerned that a lot of decisions seem to be made by people who live in or near Winterset, and that’s valid.

A concern that I have about the future is this: Within 20 years, West Des Moines will be the biggest city in Madison County, and if we keep electing Supervisors at-large, it won’t be Winterset people making decisions, it will be West Des Moines people.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the decisions will be bad or wrong, but it might mean that the unique issues facing Macksburg, East Peru, or St. Charles might not be top-of mind.

In Iowa, County Boards of Supervisors must have 3 or 5 members; those are the only options. According to Iowa Code 331.206, we can choose a representation plan based on district and population.

If we want to ensure that everyone is represented, it’s time to think about making that change.

What do you think?

This isn’t a new idea. If I understand correctly, the districts need to be formed to insure a fairly equal population in each area. I am not sure that would have the results those in smaller towns want. However, I think it should be looked into.

Absolutely there should be representation from each area of the county and those should be voted on by each district or area. Hopefully, there will be enough people interested to make a good choice of a person with the entire area’s best interest at heart and not one with their agenda only plus the county’s as a whole. We have a lot of great folks in our area who are smart and ambitious. Ready to make unbiased, informed, decisions, to make our county all it can be, rural and towns, while protecting value, beauty, environment, and residents and doing the right thing that isn’t always the easy thing. Listening and placing themselves in the shoes of others and really caring about our residents and the future of them and the county. Willing to get out with the people ask questions get involved to make the right choices. We are at a true turning point in our county. Do we grab the golden ring and run with it or do we not because that golden ring could quickly turn to be brass and they have destroyed the opportunities of growth and safety.

Like Joyce said, not a new idea! I brought up similar thought years ago at Farm Bureau meeting with elected officials (I was one), specifically potential WDM takeover. The kicker is….folks from our other town/rural areas can run for supervisor NOW, but obviously choose not to. Will they come out of the woodwork later? The days of Loren Myer/Macksburg and Jerry Ayers/ St. Charles are long gone. I do not remember any from the other areas in my lifetime, but will check the hallway plaque next time I am in courthouse.

I don’t disagree with G JoAnn… we need people to come forward from all areas and be involved. We know there are many who have the knowledge and capabilities and would do a great job.
